Hai-tcheng General Population 1906 is a historical seed accession of Cannabis sativa that the United States Department of Agriculture received from Hai-tcheng, in Liaoning, China, on 20 February 1907 and numbered plant introduction (PI) 20058.[1] No seed of the lot survives. The National Plant Germplasm System, whose database carries the department's introductions, says the accession "no longer exists and can not be requested".[1]
The lot
Frank N. Meyer, the department's agricultural explorer, sent a collection of seeds from Manchuria, northern Korea and eastern Siberia that the department received on 20 February 1907. In the printed inventory this lot is his number 283a, Newchwang, 22 May 1906: seed he had from Thomas Sammons, the American consul-general there, "who obtained the seeds from Hai-tcheng". Meyer calls it "a fine variety of hemp", and the entry refers to the lot Sammons had sent from the Hai-cheng magistrate (NPG-CHN-LIA-0019060001).[2]
