Nüsser 4459 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered by M. Nüsser in the Sanqebethu valley of Mokhotlong District, in the mountains of north-eastern Lesotho, on 8 April 1999. The valley lies within the Mokhotlong growing area. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E00313428.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The sheet carries a printed label headed Flora of Maloti, Lesotho. It gives the place as Mokhotlong District / Lesotho and Sanqebethu Valley, the altitude as 2600 m, the date as 1999-04-08 and the habitat as village environs, cultivated fields. The collector's name and number are printed as leg. M.Nüsser 4459.[3] The Edinburgh catalogue gives the same collector, number, date, place and habitat.[1]
The sheet is one of 186 that the Edinburgh herbarium catalogues under the collector name Nüsser, M., numbered between 4002 and 4733. All but one are dated 1999, and 133 come from Lesotho.[4] One other sheet from the Sanqebethu valley, a grass, Themeda triandra, was gathered the next day in open grassland between basaltic outcrops at 2975 m.[5]
Specimen and identification
The sheet holds two long leafy stems, each ending in a long, branched flowering head, and a short side shoot; the leaves are palmate, with narrow, toothed leaflets.[3] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L., in the family it prints as CANNABINACEAE, and gives the determination as det. Hilliard & Burtt 2000-11. The Edinburgh catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa L. and dates the determination to November 2000.[3][1]
