Moller 54 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered by A. Moller at Nova Moka, on the island of São Tomé, in what is now São Tomé and Príncipe, in June 1885. Two sheets of the number are known, both distributed by the herbarium of the botanic garden of the University of Coimbra: one at the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo (O-V-2164527) and one at Meise Botanic Garden (BR0000014662553).[1][2][3][4]
Collection and locality
Both sheets carry the same handwritten label of the Herbario do Jardim Bot. da Universidade de Coimbra. It reads Cannabis sativa L., S. Thomé: Nova Moka., leg. A. Moller — 6-1885. and N.º 54.[5][6] The Oslo catalogue gives the collector as A. Moller, the number 54, June 1885 and the locality S. Thome, Nova Mocka.[2]
The Meise sheet also has a printed label of the Herbier du Jardin Botanique de l'État, Brussels, stamped Comm. De Wildeman: it reached Brussels through De Wildeman.[6] The Oslo sheet carries a blank label of the Herb. Univers. Christianiensis, the university herbarium of Christiania, now Oslo.[5]
Specimen and identification
The Oslo sheet holds two stems, one densely leafy with clustered flowers and one slender and flowering; the Meise sheet holds two leafy stems and a small sprig.[5][6] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L., and both holders file it under that name; the Oslo catalogue gives Moller as the determiner.[2][4]
