Lawson 84 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at the Falls of Niagara in September 1858 and distributed as number 84 of Lawson's Canadian Plants, the series of George Lawson. The sheet is E00248603 at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, mounted with material from a second source.[1][2][3]
Collection and locality
The label at the foot of the sheet reads 84. Lawson's Canadian Plants., Cannabis sativa, L., Falls of Niagara, and Sept. 1858.[3] Another sheet of the gathering, CAN 221682 at the Canadian Museum of Nature, carries George Lawson's name, number 84, September 1858 and the locality Falls of Niagara., in Ontario, Canada.[4] Lawson, a Scottish botanist, arrived at Queen's College in Kingston, Upper Canada, as professor of chemistry and natural history in the autumn of 1858.[5]
A mixed sheet
The sheet also carries a printed Herbarium Indiae Orientalis slip of Joseph Dalton Hooker and Thomas Thomson, filled in Cannabis sativa var. indica, Hab. Himal. Bor. Occ., Regio temp., Alt. 1–7000 ped. and Coll. T.T.[3] The slip names a region of the north-west Himalaya and an altitude band, not a gathering. Edinburgh holds the same slip on Thomson s.n. (by 1878). A large fruiting stem is mounted on the left and slender flowering stems on the right. The lower ends of both reach the Lawson label, and the Thomson slip is pasted over the right-hand stems. Nothing on the mount marks which plant belongs to which label.[3] Edinburgh's catalogue joins the two labels into one entry, under Thomson, number 84, September 1858, India.[1]
Specimen and identification
Lawson's label names the plant Cannabis sativa L.; the Thomson slip names Cannabis sativa var. indica.[3] The catalogue name is Cannabis sativa L.[1]
