Landrace Wiki:Copyrights
More actions
This page sets out the copyright and licensing terms for content on Landrace.wiki. It expands on the copyright section of the General Disclaimer and is the operational reference for editors, reusers, and rights-holders. It should be read alongside the Privacy Policy, the General Disclaimer and the Editorial Norms.
Default licence
Unless a page or file states otherwise, all text on Landrace.wiki is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0).
The licence permits anyone to copy, redistribute, remix and build on the text, including for commercial purposes, on three conditions:
- Attribution. Credit Landrace.wiki and the contributors, and provide a link to the licence.
- Share-alike. Distribute derivative works under the same licence (CC BY-SA 4.0) or a compatible licence.
- No further restrictions. Do not apply legal terms or technological measures that restrict others from doing what the licence allows.
The same licence applies to the structured data exposed via the wiki's API and to the Schema.org metadata embedded in page output.
Attribution when reusing text
A compliant attribution should make clear that the material came from Landrace.wiki, where to find the original, and the licence it is under. A simple form is:
- Adapted from "PAGE_NAME" on Landrace.wiki, used under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.
For longer extracts or republication, link directly to the page being reused so that the contributor history is reachable. For derivative works, indicate clearly what was changed.
Media and files
Files (photographs, illustrations, scans, diagrams and audio) are licensed individually. Check the file description page for the applicable licence before reusing any image. The wiki uses the following licence tags on file pages:
{{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}(Attribution-ShareAlike, identical to the default text licence){{CC-BY-4.0}}(Attribution only){{CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0}}(Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, restricts commercial reuse){{CC0}}(no rights reserved, public domain dedication){{Fair-use}}(claimed under fair use or fair dealing, with rationale on the file page){{Custom}}(file-specific terms set out on the file page)
Many photographs of accessions, fields and growing areas are released under {{CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0}} by the Zomia Collective. This restricts commercial reuse, while the default for text and metadata remains CC BY-SA 4.0.
If a file page carries no licence template, treat the file as not freely licensed and do not reuse it without permission.
Contributing your own work
When you save an edit, you agree to release your contribution under CC BY-SA 4.0. You also warrant that you hold sufficient rights in the material to license it on these terms. This applies whether the contribution is text, structured data, a photograph or any other media.
You retain copyright in your contribution. The licence is non-exclusive and irrevocable, but it does not transfer ownership to the project.
If you wish to release a file under a different free licence (CC BY 4.0, CC0 and so on), apply the correct licence template on upload. The default applies only where no other template is specified.
Material from other sources
Editors may import material from other sources only where licensing allows it.
Compatible for import:
- Public domain material (no copyright restrictions remain)
- Material under CC0
- Material under CC BY 4.0 (with attribution preserved)
- Material under CC BY-SA 4.0 (with attribution preserved)
- Material under the GNU Free Documentation Licence where the source itself permits dual-licensing under CC BY-SA
Not compatible for import:
- All-rights-reserved material, except in the limited cases described under "Quotations and short extracts" below
- Material under any non-commercial licence (CC BY-NC, CC BY-NC-SA, CC BY-NC-ND)
- Material under any no-derivatives licence (CC BY-ND, CC BY-NC-ND)
- Material whose terms forbid redistribution or modification
Where text is imported under a compatible licence, the source must be cited and any attribution requirements preserved on the page.
Quotations and short extracts
Short quotations from copyrighted sources may be included where they are relevant to the topic, kept brief, and attributed to a named source with a citation. This relies on fair dealing under UK law, fair use under US law, and equivalent provisions in other jurisdictions. Long extracts, full paragraphs of journalistic copy, song lyrics and substantial reproductions of academic articles are not permitted, regardless of how useful the source is.
Quoted matter remains the property of the original author. The wiki's CC BY-SA licence does not extend to the words being quoted.
Material not under the wiki's licence
CC BY-SA 4.0 does not cover:
- The name Landrace.wiki and the project's logos and visual identity
- The name Zomia Collective and its visual identity
- Names, trademarks and seed-company identities mentioned within wiki content
- Third-party photographs and illustrations marked with their own licence on the file page
- Quoted text attributed to a named external source
- Data republished from external scientific or institutional sources where those sources retain their own terms
Mention of a name, brand or trademark on the wiki is for descriptive, scholarly and conservation-reference purposes. It does not imply endorsement, affiliation or licensing of that name.
Farmer privacy and the limits of the licence
The wiki obfuscates farmer-identifying information by design. GPS coordinates are jittered by approximately 500 m before storage. Farmer names, contact details, household locations and identifying photographs are not published without explicit consent. These protections sit alongside copyright: even where a reuser is otherwise entitled under CC BY-SA 4.0, reproducing identifying details that the wiki has deliberately omitted, attempting to reverse coordinate obfuscation, or recombining data from outside sources to re-identify a grower are not uses that the project sanctions. See the Privacy Policy for the operational detail.
Reporting suspected infringement
If you believe content on Landrace.wiki infringes your copyright, please contact us at the address given in the Privacy Policy. To help us act quickly, include:
- The exact URL of the page or file in question
- Identification of the work you believe has been infringed
- A statement of the basis for the claim (for example, that you are the rights-holder or are authorised to act on the rights-holder's behalf)
- Your contact details
We will review the report and, where appropriate, remove the material. The wiki retains full page histories, so removed material remains traceable in the revision record unless explicitly suppressed.
Hosting and jurisdiction
The wiki is hosted in the United States. Copyright claims will be handled in accordance with US law, including the notice-and-takedown provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act where applicable, alongside the wiki's own editorial review.
Changes
