Forbes 75 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered by Forbes at Delagoa Bay, today Maputo Bay, in Mozambique, in 1822, on a sheet of the herbarium of the Horticultural Society of London. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds it as P06829890.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The printed label is headed Herb. Soc. Hort. Lond. (herbarium of the Horticultural Society of London) and reads Ad Sinum Delagoa Africæ Australis. (at Delagoa Bay, southern Africa), Forbes. and 1822., with the genus Cannabis and the number written in by hand. A second label, Herb. Mus. Paris., repeats the genus.[3] The catalogue gives the number as 75, the year 1822 and the province of Maputo.[2]
Specimen and identification
The sheet holds one leafy branch with long, narrow leaflets.[3] The labels give the genus only; the catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa L. It records that leaf tissue was taken from the sheet in March 2021 for C. J. Grassa of Harvard University.[2]
