EBC 71833 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from Natal, South Africa. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds the sheet as EBC 71833.[1] It is two containers merged under one catalogue number, one from Natal and one from Turkey.
The record
The catalogue gives the artefact name and the parts held as Mixed hemp seed, the plant name as 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa, the country as South Africa, the geography description as South Africa and Turkey, Natal and the donor as Christy T & Co. The collection date is blank.[1]
Two containers, one number
The notes field reads Label source: Two containers of hemp mixed - one from Turkey - 75.1884, and one from Natal - 1879. The object is therefore not one sample from two places but two samples catalogued together. The only date attached to the South African half is the bare year 1879, and the label does not say whether that is a collection year or an acquisition year.[1]
