Codd 8505 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Prinshof Experiment Station in Gauteng, South Africa, on 7 March 1954 by L. E. Codd. The National Herbarium (PRE) holds the sheet as PRE0455860-0.[1][2] A duplicate distributed by Pretoria is at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh as E01459336, and its label carries far more than Pretoria's own entry.
Collection and locality
Pretoria's entry gives the locality as PRETORIA DIST. and nothing further. PRE stores its older localities in upper case, with the parts separated by semicolons. The locality field carries the place in ordinary case; the article quotes the string as the database holds it.[1]
What the Edinburgh label adds
The Edinburgh sheet carries a printed National Herbarium, Pretoria distribution card giving the province as Transvaal, the district as Pretoria, and the note Cultivated on Prinshof Experiment station, Pretoria. 6 ft. high woody at base, branching freely. Flowers pale yellow. It is signed L. E. Codd, numbered 8505, and dated 7/3/54. A sex symbol follows the species name and is written rapidly; it reads as the male sign, which agrees with the pale yellow flowers.[2]
Specimen and identification
Pretoria files the sheet as Cannabis sativa L. var. sativa. Edinburgh's catalogue carries no collector, number, date or country for E01459336 at all, filing it under the region Southern Africa; everything above is read from the label.[1][2]
