Ascherson 2230 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered in gardens at Kasr Dachl, today Al-Qasr, in the Dakhla Oasis of Egypt, on Gerhard Rohlfs's expedition into the Libyan Desert of 1873–74. Its label gives the day as 17 January, with an overwritten year; the museum's catalogue gives 17 January 1877. Paul Ascherson, the expedition's botanist, determined it. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sheet as P06886056; it came from the Berlin herbarium in 1914.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The expedition's label is stamped G. Rohlfs Expedition in die libysche Wüste (G. Rohlfs's expedition into the Libyan Desert). It reads, by hand, the number 2230, Cannabis sativa L. and Kasr Dachl, in Gärten S.W. (Kasr Dachl, in gardens), above the printed line bestimmt von P. Ascherson (determined by P. Ascherson) and the date 17. I. (17 January) with a year whose last digit is written over. The museum's label reads Collection Ascherson and Reçu de l'Herbier de Berlin le 20 Avril 1914 (received from the Berlin herbarium on 20 April 1914).[3] The catalogue gives the locality as Kasr Daihl, in Särten S.W and the date 17 January 1877.[2]
Specimen and identification
The sheet holds one tall stem, leafy and flowering along its length, with its roots.[3] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L., and the catalogue files it under that name. The catalogue records that leaf tissue was taken from the sheet in March 2021 for C. J. Grassa of Harvard University.[2]
