Anon. s.n., Imaichi is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered at Imaichi, then a town and now part of the city of Nikkō in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, in September 1901, from the herbarium of the Japanese botanist Tomitarō Makino. The gathering was distributed under the Makino Herbarium's number 120388. The Naturalis Biodiversity Center holds a sheet as L.1592648;[1] duplicates are held in Edinburgh, Taipei and Colorado, and a fifth, in Munich, is known from its DNA sample.
Collection and locality
The label is the printed distribution label of the Makino Herbarium, From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino (1862—1957), one of the pioneer botanists of Japan, with the herbarium's number stamped at the top and the entries typed. On the Leiden sheet the number is 120388, and the entries read Cannabis sativa L., Imaichi City, Tochigi Pref., Date: Sept., 1901 and Det. K. Hiyama (1960); the line for the collector, Coll.:, is blank.[2] The label gives Makino's death year, so it was printed after 1957; the determination on it is dated 1960. Imaichi was a town in 1901; it became a city in 1954 and was merged into Nikkō in 2006, so the label's Imaichi City is the form of 1960.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds a duplicate as E01459321, with the same label typed separately and the collector's line again blank.[3][4] A third sheet, at the herbarium of Academia Sinica in Taipei (HAST 75458), carries the same label with the place typed Imaichi, Imaichi City.[5] A fourth is catalogued by the herbarium of the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History (COLO) as 02720183, with the place given as Imaichi, cult. prov. Shimotsuke (Imaichi, cultivated, Shimotsuke province).[6] The catalogues of the Leiden, Taipei and COLO sheets name Makino as the collector;[1][5][6] the three labels read leave the line blank.
Specimen and identification
The Leiden sheet carries two leafy stems and a separate pair of palmate leaves, with a large empty paper envelope above the label.[2] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L., determined by K. Hiyama in 1960, the name all four catalogues record.[2][1][5][6]
Sequence data
Leaf tissue from a fifth sheet of the gathering, voucher M:288741 of the herbarium in Munich, was sampled by a herbarium-genomics project coordinated by Christopher J. Grassa of Harvard University. It was made public on 24 February 2025 as BioSample SAMEA112688141, which gives the date as September 1901, the place as Imaichi City, Tochigi Prefecture, the collector as Tomitaro Makino and the plant as pistillate.[7]
