Summary
"Hemp drug shop, bhang, ganja, & majum displayed, Khandesh." Plate inserted between pp. 332 and 333 of the Report of the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission, 1893–94, vol. I (Simla: Government Central Printing Office, 1894), in chapter XVI, "Provincial systems examined", with the imprint "Survey of India Offices, Calcutta, August 1894".
A shopkeeper sits in the doorway behind a counter laid with a striped cloth, a hand balance beside him; a second man stands at the counter, on which are stoppered glass jars and two shallow metal bowls of dark loose material. The plate gives no date for the photograph itself: August 1894 is the date of the Survey of India Offices imprint. Khandesh was a district of the Bombay Presidency, whose witnesses were examined in vol. VII of the report.
