This inline tag flags a statement that needs a source. It is a sourcing flag in the editorial tag family. Place it immediately after the claim it marks.

Usage

{{Citation needed}}, or the shortcut {{cn}}.

With an optional date:

{{cn|date=May 2026}}

Rendered output:

The variety was first recorded in 1910[citation needed].

Parameters

date
Optional. The month and year the tag was added, shown as a muted suffix. Useful for tracking how long a claim has stood unsourced.

When to use

On a specific factual claim that is not supported by a cited source and reasonably calls for one: a date, a figure, a name, an attribution or any statement a reader would want to verify. Place one tag per claim.

When not to use

Do not tag a whole paragraph or a general statement that no single citation could carry. For a source that exists but may not support the claim use Template:Verify source. For a source that supports the claim but is too weak to carry it use Template:Better source. For text that reads as the wiki's own synthesis use Template:Original research.
