Evidentiary scope
The label records Конопля дикорастущая (wild-growing hemp) at the village of Mongoli on the lower Amur in August 1934. It adds a use, Употребление: для плетения веревок. (use: for twisting ropes), and a name, Туземное название — опохта (ульчский язык) (native name opokhta, Ulch language). It does not say who used the plant, whether the rope was made from these plants or from hemp in general, or where the plants grew relative to any field. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3686 × 5305 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree, except where noted.
- Label (blue ink, one hand, at the top of the sheet). Конопля дикорастущая — дер. [village] / нижний Амур. / август 1934 г. / А. Золотарев / Употребление: для плетения / веревок. / Туземное название — опохта / (ульчский язык).
- Stamp (violet). Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis.
- Pencil (another hand). Cannabis sativa L. s. l.
- Readings that differ. The village was read Монголи and Мамом (or Малым, Мамаш); a third look finds six letters beginning М and ending -оли. The catalogue gives Дер. Монголи. The language was read ульчский and у…ий (not resolved); a third look gives ульчский, which the readings agree begins у- and ends -ий. The native name опохта was read alike (the second reading allows опоxта).
- The stamped number beside the barcode, partly hidden (1197…), is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the Moscow depository, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
The point 52.13, 140.38 is the village of Mongol (Монгол) in Ulchsky District, OpenStreetMap node 1472607418 (Wikidata Q4301625), the only place of the name on the lower Amur in OpenStreetMap or Wikidata. The label's Монголи is a form of the same name; the identification rests on the name, on the lower Amur that the label states, and on the label's note on the Ulch language, which agrees with the village's place in Ulch country. It places the gathering at the village, not at a spot within it or beside it. SRTM gives 11 m at the village; the label gives no altitude. The herbarium's database gives no point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
Editorial treatment
Place. The first reading and the catalogue give the village as Монголи; the second reading could not read it (see Label reading). Mongol, a village of Ulchsky District on the lower Amur, is the only place of that name found in the region, and the Russian Wikipedia names an Ulch writer born there in 1915, which agrees with the label's note on the Ulch language. The title and locality take Mongol on that evidence; the article gives the label's form beside it.
Local name. The infobox gives the label's опохта with its transliteration. The label calls it the native name and names the Ulch language; no dictionary of Ulch was consulted for this page, and the page does not gloss the word further.
Use. The note on use is the label's and is reported as such. Wild-growing is the label's word; the accession is classified Other.
Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's A. Zolotarev, the label's А. Золотарев. No source read for this page gives his full name, which is not linked.
