Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant at a hot spring near the river Alla in the Barguzin basin in August 1911. It gives no use and no note on cultivation, and the determination as Cannabis ruderalis is a judgement from the specimen. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3763 × 5169 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.
- Printed. MUSEUM BOTANICUM ACADEMIAE SCIENTIARUM PETROPOLITANAE. / Баргузинская почвен.-ботан. партія командированной по ВЫСОЧАЙШЕМУ повелѣнію Амурской Экспедиціи. / Забайкальск. обл. Бассейнъ р. Баргузина. / 1911. V / Собр. А Жукова.
- By hand. 528. / Cannabis ruderalis / У горячаго ключа, вблизи р. Аллы. / III-20.
- Stamps. Violet Ex herb. Acad. Sc. Petr[op.]; a blue box Herbarium Academiae Scientiarum Petropol. on the sheet.
- Determiner (violet ink). Опр. and a signature.
- Pencil beside the label: 20 and an abbreviation, then у гор. кл. Алла (at the hot spring Alla).
- Readings that differ. The determiner's signature was read В. Куваев and В. Курбас; a third look gives В. Ку[в/р]аев. The determiner field takes the catalogue's V. Kuvaev. The abbreviation after 20 in pencil was read ав. (August) and вер. (versts), and is not used.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the Moscow depository, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
The point 54.70, 110.71 is the Alla hot springs (Аллинские термальные источники), OpenStreetMap node 5528374303, where the river Alla leaves the mountains for the Barguzin valley, in Kurumkansky District, Buryatia. The Russian Wikipedia places the springs there, 8 km west of the Alla settlement, and they are the only hot spring on the Alla in OpenStreetMap; that agreement with the label's hot spring near the river Alla is what the identification rests on. SRTM gives about 710 to 720 m there; the label gives no altitude. The herbarium's database publishes the point 54.735291, 110.597893 with an uncertainty of 17 km, which lies on the Alla 7.9 km upstream of the springs; it covers the springs, and the springs' own point is used. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
Editorial treatment
Taxon. The infobox takes the label's own Cannabis ruderalis.
Determiner. The label's signature after Опр. is not read alike by the two readings; the determiner field takes the catalogue's V. Kuvaev. Whether the determination was made with the label or later, the sheet does not say.
Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's A. Zhukova, the label's А Жукова. No source read for this page gives her full name, which is not linked.
