Page scope
Zaozhuang treats the city of Zaozhuang, in southern Shandong, with the old Yi County (峄县) and Teng County (now Tengzhou), as a historical hemp growing area: the rope hemp of Yihsien in 1917 and the hemp of Dawu, Gangtou, Jisuo and Yizhuang, whose planting shrank by the 1980s. The hemp district round Tai'an and Laiwu, further north, is treated at Tai'an.

Why Zaozhuang is a growing area

  • The United States Department of Agriculture's inventory of plant introductions for April to June 1917 (published 1922) prints the Rev. R. G. Coonradt's note from Yihsien, Shantung: "The hemp is planted here in March, in rich, black soil, and often irrigated. From the fiber taken from the outside of the stalk our best rope is made." Yihsien is the romanised name of Yi County (峄县).
  • The 2006 yearbook of Zaozhuang (枣庄年鉴), in its section on fibre crops, says that hemp (大麻) has a long history in the city, names Dawu, Gangtou, Jisuo and Yizhuang as its main producing places, and gives 1,700 mu planted and 260,000 jin harvested in 1985.
  • The Qianlong gazetteer of Yi County (峄县志, 1761) says that the high, dry north-west of the county suits millet, 麻, broomcorn, proso, pulses and cotton. The word 麻 there is not specific to hemp.

How the border is drawn

  • The four producing places of the yearbook all lie in what is now Tengzhou, a county-level city of Zaozhuang: Dawu and Jisuo are towns of Tengzhou; Yizhuang was joined to Dawu and Gangtou to Binhu in 2001. Yihsien, the town of the 1917 note, is the old seat of Yi County, now Yicheng District.
  • The sources name places in both the west (Tengzhou) and the south-east (Yicheng) of the city, and the yearbook speaks of the city as a whole. The line follows the city of Zaozhuang as OpenStreetMap maps it (relation 3246762): about 4,600 km², the figure in the infobox.
  • The infobox point (34.92, 117.39) is the centre of the border, not a field.

Growing status

The status is Historical. The sources date from 1917 to 1985: the 1917 note is the earliest year a source records hemp grown there, and the yearbook's figure for 1985 the latest. The yearbook reports that planting shrank, not that it ended.

Sources

  • USDA inventory no. 51 (1922). The department received the seed on 1 June 1917, for its Office of Fiber Investigations, and numbered it plant introduction 44804.
  • Zaozhuang yearbook (2006). The section carries no year later than 1985, and its account of the decline is undated.
  • Zaozhuang health commission (2023). A history of the city's maternal and child health hospital: county-level Zaozhuang was set up and Yi County abolished in 1960, and the old county seat is now in Yicheng District.
