Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label calls the plant wild (Wild.field), with the collector and a month in the 1930s. It names no place and no use. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557916, 1,035 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Label (printed 清華大學植物標本室 / HERBARIUM OF TSING HUA UNIVERSITY, typed, faint, cut at the right edge): Cannabis sativa L. / Wild.field / Coll. C.Y.Yang. / Det. (blank) / Herb. No (blank) / Date June 19(printed)3[·] (the year's last digit cut off by the label's edge).
  • Hg Cl2 at the sheet's edge; stamped number 421585.

The readings differ on the collector's first initial: once C.Y.Yang. (the C faint) and once J.Y.Yang, uncertain. The page takes C. Y. Yang, which the catalogue also gives.

Georeferencing

No point is given: the label names no place. Tsing Hua University's herbarium was in Peiping, but the seat of a herbarium is not where its plants were gathered, and the catalogue's Hebei appears nowhere on the sheet. The province field is left empty.

Editorial treatment

Classification. Feral follows from the label's Wild. Whether Wild.field means a wild plant in a field or an uncultivated field, the label calls the plant wild.

Title and date. The label gives no number and no place, and only the first three digits of the year: the title takes s.n. and the decade, and no date is stored.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's C. Y. Yang. No source on him was found: the only C. Y. Yang in the Harvard botanist index was born in 1948. The name is not linked.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue dates the sheet 1932; the label's year has lost its last digit.
  • The catalogue places the sheet in Hebei; no place appears on the sheet.
