Why the appellation is on the map
- Press reports name cannabis plots destroyed inside the present district, by police station:
- Northeast Live (17 December 2023): 40,000 to 45,000 plants in 14 jungle plots at Arakata, under the Sidhai police station, "in West Tripura district".
- The Week, from the Press Trust of India (15 December 2023): about 60,000 plants destroyed in the Simna area of West Tripura district.
- Tripura Chronicle (15 September 2026): about 80,000 plants in ten plots at Urabari, Noagaon village committee, under the Sidhai police station, cleared by the Mohanpur subdivisional police and the Border Security Force.
- The sources report the cultivation by district and police station and name no tract larger than a village, so the district is the unit.
- Two reports that name "West Tripura" are not used for the area:
- Organiser (19 December 2023) places an operation at Gajeria and Ganiyamara "in the West Tripura district"; NE Now (18 December 2023) reports the same operation, with the same figure of about 31,500 plants, under the Bishalgarh police station in Sepahijala district.
- A 2006 Oneindia report of about 46,000 plants destroyed "mainly in Tripura's west district" names the Bishalgarh and Melaghar police stations. It predates the division of the old West Tripura District in January 2012, and both police stations are now in Sepahijala District.
How the border is drawn
- The border is a proxy: the present West Tripura District (Sadar, Mohanpur and Jirania subdivisions), from the OpenStreetMap administrative relation for the district. The district administration gives the area as 983.63 km²; the OpenStreetMap outline measures about 920 km², the figure in the infobox.
- The district takes in the state capital, Agartala. Every reported site is under the Sidhai police station or in the Simna area.
Growing status
The status is Active: plots are reported destroyed in December 2023 and September 2026. No source read says that growing in the district has ended.
Where the sources disagree
- The date of the Simna attack. The Week (15 December 2023) and Northeast Live (15 December 2023) report an attack that week on a police party returning from a cannabis operation in West Tripura; The Week places the operation at Simna. A later Northeast Live report (17 December 2023) dates an attack on the police in West Tripura to 15 November. The article follows the two December reports.
Sources not used
- The state police's own list of operations (police.tripura.gov.in) could not be reached.
Page type
The page was created as the growing area West Tripura. It became an appellation of the Tripura Hills growing area when that area was drawn on the whole state of Tripura; its border, sources and news items are unchanged.
