Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The slip places the plant on a Mt. slope in Mong-tze Hsien, at 1,900 m, in October 1939. It gives no use. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00578081, 1,054 × 1,440 pixels).
- Field slip (typed): C.W.WANG 83330 oct.6, 1939 / Mong-tze Hsien, Moo-bei. / alt. 1900 m / Mt. slope / fl green.
- Tag: 雲南 and further characters, partly under the red number / YUNNAN … / No. 83330 (red).
- Determination slip. Cannabis sativa Linn. / Determinavit Y. Liu 1954.
- YUNNAN province stamp; stamped number 277412.
The two readings agree; one marks Moo-bei uncertain and reads the tag's Chinese line as naming the collector.
- Kunming sheet (KUN 0169116), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (KUN 0169116, 959 × 1,440 pixels). Form (printed 中國科學院植物分類研究所昆明工作站 / 雲南植物, filled in by hand): 採集號數 83330 (the first figure cursive) / 日期 oct. 6. and a cramped year, read as 1939 and as 189[?] / 產地 five or six cursive characters, read once as 蒙自剌竹山 (uncertain after 蒙自) and once as 景東剌…, the rest unread / 海拔高度 1900 m / 花 綠色 / 採集人 王啓無 (cursive); the other lines blank. Tag (printed, number in red): 雲南 / 王啓無, three characters struck through in red, then 劉 and a character read as 瑛 and as 珠 / YUNNAN Wang, a word struck through in red, & Liu / No. 83330 / (1939-40). Determination slip (typed): Cannabia sativa L. / 定名人 H.Chuang 72.9. Round stamp 中國科學院 / 昆明植物研究所 / 标本室; KUN No. 0525322. The readings agree on the number, the altitude, the flower colour, the tag's number and & Liu, and the slip; one reading is low in confidence throughout.
Georeferencing
Mong-tze Hsien is Mengzi County (蒙自縣), today Mengzi, a county-level city of Honghe in Yunnan; Wikidata gives 蒙自縣 as an alias of Mengzi (Q1201056). Moo-bei was not found: it was searched as 木北, 牧北, 木贝 and 莫北 within a box around Mengzi in Nominatim and Wikidata. The point 23.33, 103.48 is the middle of Mengzi's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 2719414, about 2,164 km²), checked to fall inside it; SRTM gives 1,796 m there against the label's 1,900 m. The present area is taken for the county of 1939. It is an area point for the county, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 27 km.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's C. W. Wang. He is Wang Chi-wu (王启无, 1913–1987): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates and notes that he collected mostly in Yunnan, and Wikidata gives 王启无 as the Chinese form of the same entry. The prose links Wang Chi-wu.
Elevation. The elevation field stores the label's 1,900 m.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Kunming sheets share the number, the date, the altitude and the flower colour, and the Kunming form names 王啓無 (Wang Chi-wu) as collector. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
The Kunming tag. The tag names Wang & Liu, after a struck name, and in characters 王啓無 and 劉 with a second character read as 瑛 and as 珠. The Beijing slip and the Kunming form name Wang alone; the collector field keeps C. W. Wang. The second collector is not identified: the Y. Liu who determined the Beijing sheet in 1954 is not shown to be the same man.
The Kunming form's place. One reading takes the place's first two characters as 蒙自 (Mengzi), which fits the Beijing slip's Mong-tze Hsien; the other reads 景東. The characters after them were not found as a place, and the point is unchanged.
Source discrepancies
- The tag on the Kunming sheet names Wang & Liu; the Beijing slip and the Kunming form name Wang alone.
- The Beijing slip names the plant Cannabis sativa Linn., determined by Y. Liu in 1954; the Kunming slip, typed Cannabia sativa L., is H. Chuang's, dated 72.9. The identified-by field keeps Y. Liu.
