Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places the plant on road side at Lung-ho-chi in September 1926. It gives no use. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00578034, 1,011 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field form (printed FLORA OF CHINA / 中國植物, completed by hand): Field No. 2795 / Date Sept. 5. '26 / Locality Lung-ho-Chi, Kiangsu / Habitat on road side / Habit Herb / Height 2 ft. / Leaf green above, light green below / Fruit green / Collector F. T. Wang. The tag repeats 2795.
  • Determination slip. Cannabis sativa L. / 定名人 (determined by) a signature of three characters, beginning 張, not read / 75年5月21日.

The two readings agree on the text. One left the third digit of the number (4 or 9) and the year ('24 or '26) open, and the middle syllable of the place (ko or ho) and the province word are uncertain in both; the number 2795 and the year 1926 are the catalogue's too.

Georeferencing

No point is given: Lung-ho-chi (the middle syllable can also be read ko) was not found. It was searched in OpenStreetMap within Jiangsu as 龙集, 龙阁, 龙葛, 龙歌 and 龙格, and as Longgeji, Longji and Longge. No three-syllable place matched; the two-syllable Longji places in Jiangsu and Anhui leave out the middle syllable. The province field takes Jiangsu, from the label's Kiangsu.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's F. T. Wang. He is Wang Fa-tsuan (汪发缵, 1899–1985): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates and PE as his herbarium, and Wikidata gives F.T.Wang as the standard form of 汪发缵. The prose links Wang Fa-tsuan.

Determination. The slip's 75年 gives no era, so its date is not converted.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
