Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant in kitchen gardens at Zolotaya Sopka near Troitsk in July 1943. It does not say whether the plant was sown there or came up as a weed, and gives no use. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (6625 × 9714 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.
- Printed form. ГЕРБАРИЙ ГЛАВНОГО БОТАНИЧЕСКОГО САДА / АКАДЕМИИ НАУК СССР / HERBARIUM HORTI BOTANICI PRINCIPALIS / ACAD. SCIENT. URSS (MHA) / Растения Урала — Plantae Uralenses / Челябинская область, близ ~~Челябинска~~ Троицка / Provincia Tscheliabinsk, prope ~~Tscheliabinsk~~ Troitsk / . . 19 . . Собр. (leg.) Л. А. Уткин (L. A. Utkin) / . . 19 . . Опр. (det.) (blank) / Типография № 9 У. п. Мосгорисполкома 616—3 000. The struck words are struck in the printing.
- By hand (pencil). Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. / Золотая сопка, огороды. / 4 VII + 43.
- The middle of сопка is overwritten; both readings take the word as сопка.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the Moscow depository, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
The point 54.05, 61.61 is Zolotaya Sopka, OpenStreetMap node 623058350, a former railway settlement that the Russian Wikipedia says was joined to Troitsk in 1961; in 1943 it lay near the town, as the label says. A pine wood of the same name lies 4.5 km to the east-north-east, but the label's kitchen gardens belong to the settlement. The point places the gathering at the settlement, not at a spot within it. The herbarium's database publishes the point 54.048147, 61.599571, 0.5 km from the settlement's, and marks it as not taken from the label; the settlement's own point is used. SRTM gives about 160 to 175 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
Editorial treatment
Classification. The label says огороды (kitchen gardens), ground under cultivation, without saying whether the plant was grown or was a weed among the crops. Neither Feral (which needs a fallow, as on Utkin s.n., Troitsk (1941)) nor a landrace follows from it; the accession is classified Other.
Urals. The form is headed Plants of the Urals. The page gives the country and the province of the label, Chelyabinsk Oblast in Russia, and makes no claim about where the Urals, or Europe and Asia, end.
Collector. The collector field takes the label's printed L. A. Utkin. No source read for this page gives his full name, which is not linked. His other sheets from near Troitsk are Utkin s.n., Troitsk (1941) and Utkin s.n., Troitsk (1943).
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue's point is marked as not taken from the label (see Georeferencing).
