Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant on the fallows of an institute's farm near Troitsk in July 1941. It gives no use. The accession is classified Feral because the label places the plant on fallow ground, land that had been under crops; the label does not say whether hemp had been grown there, and a single gathering does not establish a feral population. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (6637 × 9799 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.

  • Printed form. ГЕРБАРИЙ ГЛАВНОГО БОТАНИЧЕСКОГО САДА / АКАДЕМИИ НАУК СССР / HERBARIUM HORTI BOTANICI PRINCIPALIS / ACAD. SCIENT. URSS (MHA) / Растения Урала — Plantae Uralenses / Челябинская область, близ ~~Челябинска~~ Троицка / Provincia Tscheliabinsk, prope ~~Tscheliabinsk~~ Troitsk / . . 19 . . Собр. (leg.) Л. А. Уткин (L. A. Utkin) / . . 19 . . Опр. (det.) (blank) / Типография № 9 У. п. Мосгорисполкома 616—3 000. The struck words are struck in the printing.
  • By hand (pencil). Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. / Подсобное хоз-во Троицкого / Вет. инст.; залежи. / 27.VII. + 41.
  • Readings that differ. The month was read VII and VI or VII; a third look finds a V and two strokes, July, the catalogue's month. The last word was read залежи (fallows) both times, the second time as the likeliest of three.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the Moscow depository, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

The point 54.08, 61.55 is the town of Troitsk, OpenStreetMap node 286523928, in Chelyabinsk Oblast. The label places the fallows on the auxiliary farm of the Troitsk Veterinary Institute, near the town; where that farm lay in 1941 was not found in any source read (the institute's teaching farm of today lies 2 km from the town's point, but nothing ties it to 1941). The point stands for the town and its near surroundings, not for the farm. SRTM gives 170 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 6 km.

Editorial treatment

Classification. Both readings give залежи, fallows: land that had been under crops and was resting. The accession is classified Feral on that ground; the label does not say whether hemp had been grown there.

Urals. The form is headed Plants of the Urals. The page gives the country and the province of the label, Chelyabinsk Oblast in Russia, and makes no claim about where the Urals, or Europe and Asia, end.

Collector. The collector field takes the label's printed L. A. Utkin. No source read for this page gives his full name, which is not linked. His other sheets from near Troitsk are Utkin s.n., Zolotaya Sopka (1943) and Utkin s.n., Troitsk (1943).
