Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label reads Anlung, 500 m. on open edge of dense scrub. herbaceous, frt. greenish, and dates the gathering 20 October 1930; the New York catalogue gives the habitat as Open edge of dense scrub. It gives no use. The plant grew at the edge of scrub, with no word of cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label and the catalogue; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because the label does not say whether the plant was cultivated, escaped or wild.

Label reading

Read from the garden's image as relayed by GBIF's image cache (2000 × 3000 pixels) and Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high). The two printed labels are identical.

  • Label. 國立中央研究院自然歷史博物館植物標本室 / Ex Herbario of / The Metropolitan Museum of Natural History / Academia Sinica, Nanking, China. / Flora of Kweichow / CANNABIS SATIVA Linn. / Anlung, 500 m. on open edge of dense scrub. herbaceous, frt. greenish / Y. Tsiang No. 7431 / Det. by Y. Tsiang / Oct. 20, 1930.
  • New York, determination slip. E. Small, Aug. 1975: Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. sativa.
  • Nanjing, read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's images (NAS00290025, 1,000 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290027, 994 × 1,440 pixels). On both sheets, the printed field label (FLORA OF KWEICHOW), typed: Locality Anlung, Lohchu, S. Kchow, Border of K[·]i (the middle of the last word lies under the printed word Altitude) / Altitude 500 m. / Habitat At open edge of dense scrub / Habit Herbaceous / Leaf Deep green above, whitish below / Fruit Greenish / Y. Tsiang No. 7431 / Date October 20, 1930.; and the determination label of the New York and Edinburgh sheets. Tag 7431; KWEICHOW province stamp. The two readings agree; neither reads the hidden letters.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Anlung is Anlong County (安龙, Wikidata Q557922), whose seat lies at about 1,380 m in SRTM, some 880 m above the label's 500 m. Of 113 places mapped by OpenStreetMap inside the county, the lowest, Pojiao, lies at 895 m, and the lowest water found, the Tianshengqiao reservoir, at 761 m. Nothing sampled in the county reaches 500 m. The altitude may be wrong or approximate, or the plant may have come from the deep Nanpan valley on the county's edge; the label does not say which. The field label on the two Nanjing sheets adds Lohchu, which was not identified, S. Kchow and Border of K…; with the end of the last word hidden, it gives no place that can be pointed to, and the decision stands. The garden's catalogue carries a point at 25.106883, 105.331774 with an uncertainty of 36 km, a county-level estimate; it is not adopted.

The elevation field stores the label's 500 m, as written. The province field takes Guizhou.

Editorial treatment

Four sheets, one accession. The New York and Edinburgh sheets share the label, number and date; the two Nanjing sheets carry the same number and date, the same determination label and a fuller field label. The New York sheet is the infobox image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's Y. Tsiang. He is Tsiang Ying (蒋英, 1898–1982), who in 1930 headed the herbarium of the Academia Sinica's natural history museum; H.-L. Li (1948) records his collecting in Kweichow in 1930–1931. The prose links that form.

Source discrepancies

  • Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place or country for its sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan).
  • The label's 500 m does not fit the terrain of Anlong County (see Georeferencing).
