Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant in the environs of a fortification of the Dzharkent uezd in September 1920. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3607 × 5065 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.

  • Label (green ink). 432. (top left, over the stamp) / stamp Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis / Cannabis sativa L. / Джарк. у. Окр. укр. [name] / stamp Ex Herbario Horti Botanici Universitatis Asiae Mediae. / 16. IX. 1920. / В. Титов. A round violet stamp with Гербарий at its centre lies over the upper right; its rim was not read.
  • Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
  • Readings that differ. The fortification's name was read Хоргос and Лоргое (with Лоргос allowed); two third looks found the first letter a cursive loop that could be Х or Л. The uezd was read Джарк. and Джеарк.; both are the abbreviation of Dzharkent.
  • The number 432. is not said to be a field number, and the page does not use it as one.
  • The stamped number 230034 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label names the environs of a fortification in the Dzharkent uezd, and the fortification's name was read in two ways (Хоргос; Лоргое or Лоргос). If it is Khorgos, the place exists: the village of Khorgos (Қорғас) on the Kazakh side of the border, OpenStreetMap node 411935261, which the Russian Wikipedia says was founded in 1882 as a Cossack settlement, about 31 km east of Zharkent. That page does not call it a fortification, and the reading is not agreed, so no point is taken from it. The Dzharkent uezd of Semirechye is a historical unit whose area is not that of any present-day district, so no area point or province is taken from it either.

Editorial treatment

Place. The locality keeps the label's agreed words; the fortification's name is left out of it and of the title.

Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's V. Titov, the label's В. Титов. No source read gives his full name, which is not linked.

Country. The country field follows the herbarium's filing under Kazakhstan; the Dzharkent uezd's seat, Zharkent, lies in Kazakhstan.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives no locality; the label names the Dzharkent uezd.
