Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The slip names two regions and a climatic zone. It gives no date, habitat or use. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of the museum's image of the shared sheet (P02443058, 1600 × 2397 pixels); the museum's own image server refused the connection.
- Slip: Herb. Ind. Or. Hook. fil. & Thomson / Cannabis sativa L. var. indica / Hab. Maisor & Carnatic / Regio trop. / Alt. followed by dashes / Coll. and an initial before Thomson. One reading takes the initial as G., the other as G. or J.
- Printed label: INDES ORIENTALES. / Donné par MM. J-D. Hooker et Thomson. 1859.; stamp HERB. MUS. PARIS. One reading takes the year as 1859 or 1839; the catalogue gives 1859.
The museum also publishes an image of P06780076 alone under CC BY 4.0, but GBIF holds no copy of it and the museum's server refused the connection; the image of the shared sheet is under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 and is not uploaded.
Georeferencing
No point is given. Maisor & Carnatic names two historical regions of southern India, the former princely state of Mysore and the Carnatic, which together run across today's Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Neither is a district, and the slip names no place within them.
Editorial treatment
Title and date. The slip gives no number and no date, so the title takes s.n., the place in today's English spelling, and by 1859, the year of the donation printed on the museum's label.
Collector. The collector field is left empty, and the article gives the slip's Thomson. The initial before the name is not legible with confidence; the catalogue's Thomson, T. (Thomas Thomson, Hooker's partner in the distribution) is not adopted, because other herbaria catalogue several hundred sheets from Maisor and the Carnatic under a G. Thomson, and no source read says who he was. The page does not identify the collector.
Place. The locality field gives the slip's words.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives the collector as Thomson, T.; the slip's initial is not clearly a T.
