Discussion

Inclusion

Kew's catalogue names the object Hemp muslin and files it under the plant name 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa. Catalogues use the word hemp for other fibres too; here the plant name identifies the plant as Cannabis. The cloth is an object made from cannabis, and neither wording is hedged, so the attribution is Stated. The infobox quotes the object's name, Hemp muslin.

Evidentiary scope

The entry gives no place in China, no maker and no date of making. It documents undyed hemp cloth from China obtained by its collector by 1993; it does not document where or how the cloth was made, or where its fibre was grown. It documents no plant, population or living holding, and landrace, feral and conservation fields do not apply to an artefact.

Kew's two photographs of the object show the papers kept with the sample, not the cloth, and no image is used.

Editorial treatment

The collection date is not the date of making. Kew's collection date, 1993, is when the collector obtained the cloth: its help page defines the collector as the person who first obtained a specimen. The date made is left empty. The date acquired is 2012, from the entry book number 1.2012.

Names. The field collector gives E. D. Chang, Kew's Chang ED in initials form, and the acquired-from field J. Balfour-Paul, from Balfour-Paul J. The donor notes name the person the muslin was a gift from; the article quotes them as Kew gives them.

No place or culture is entered. The catalogue gives China and nothing finer, and names no people as makers or users.

Stored with other objects. Kew's notes say the sample is kept with three objects of Strobilanthes cusia (EBC 91917 to 91919). The article quotes the note and draws nothing from it.

These notes were recorded during artefact preparation. Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 17:56, 13 October 2026 (+07)
