Page scope
Taounate treats Taounate as a cannabis growing area: Taounate Province on the southern side of the Rif, apart from the Ghafsai country of the Beni Zeroual, which has its own page at Beni Zeroual. It covers the arrival of the crop, the areas measured by the national surveys, the effects of hybrids on water and forest, and the legal status. The province as an administrative unit is treated at Taounate Province.

Why Taounate is a growing area
- The 2004 and 2005 national surveys report cannabis by province: 14,718 ha in Taounate Province in 2004 (12 per cent of the national total) and 12,362 ha in 2005 (17 per cent).
- Hini, Errafik and Boujaddi (2026) surveyed 200 cannabis growers in the Taounate circle and describe the crop's spread there from 1998.
- TelQuel (2024) reports cooperatives in the province among the first licensed to grow the local seed. Since 2022 the province has been one of the three in which cannabis may be licensed.
- The status is Active: the surveys, the 2026 study and the 2024 report all describe cultivation since 2000.
- Genebank lots collected in 2023 in the province, outside the Cercle de Ghafsai, are filed here.
Extent and border
- The map border is approximate. It is drawn on Taounate Province less the Cercle de Ghafsai and the town of Ghafsai, which are drawn as Beni Zeroual. It covers about 4,230 km². The whole province covers about 5,570 km².
- The survey figures quoted in the article are for the whole province, including the Ghafsai circle.
- The southern part of the province, towards Fez, falls inside the border because it is part of the province, not because a source records cannabis there. The 2004 survey describes Mezraoua as holding back the crop's advance to the south.
- The area figure in the infobox is rounded from the border.
Sources
- Hini et al. 2026 is written in Arabic, with English and French abstracts, and was read in the Arabic text. Page numbers in the article are the journal's. The figures of 1,000 to 1,800 ha for Khlalfa, Tamedit and Bouhouda are the authors' citation of the 2003 national survey, and the article says so.
- Dating the arrival. The 2004 survey dates the crop at Khlalfa from 1998 and its large spread from 2000. Hini and colleagues date it in the Taounate circle to 1998–1999 and in the Ghafsai circle to the middle of the 1990s. The accounts agree.
- Yields and eradication. The 2005 survey's yields come from weighed harvests; the eradication figure is the Moroccan government's, which the survey did not verify.
- Chouvy and Afsahi (2014) give the 2005 figures for Taounate (3,000 ha eradicated out of 12,362 ha) from the 2005 survey; the article cites the survey directly.
