Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places the plant in тугайные луга около мог. Киик. (tugai meadows near the tomb Kiik), on the lower reaches of the river Karatal, on 9 August 1928. On the label поля (fields) is struck through and луга (meadows) written above it; the catalogue gives the struck reading, тугайные поля около мог. Киик. The tugai is the riverside woodland and its clearings. The label gives no use and no note on cultivation. The plant grew in a meadow, outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3409 × 4731 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.
- Printed label. В. И. Смирнов. / Опр. (blank) / V. SMIRNOV. Plantae Kasakstanicae, gub. Dschetysu distr. Taldy-Kurgan. 1928.
- By hand (violet). Cannabis sativa L. / тугайные луга около мог. Киик. / 9/VIII 28 / № 921. The word поля is struck through and луга written above it; the catalogue keeps поля.
- Map slip. Масштаб 60 в. в дюйме; a red ink mark on the Karatal (Р. Кара-тал) just south of Ур. Сарой.
- Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
- The tomb. Read Киик with the catalogue, and once Кишк (with Кинк allowed); a third look counted four strokes, ии.
- The stamped number 230039 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
The point 45.884689, 77.210369 is the one the herbarium's database publishes for the three sheets of 9 August 1928 (field numbers 919, 921 and 922), with an uncertainty of 10 km. It lies 50 m from a channel of the Karatal (OpenStreetMap way 190755572) in Karatal District, Jetisu Region, on the river's lower course, as the printed label says; SRTM gives 364 m. The tomb of Kiik is not in OpenStreetMap, under the spellings Киик, Қиық and Kiik, and a search of the lower Karatal for tombs and sites found none of that name, so the point is a point on this reach of the river and not the tomb. The red mark on the label's map lies on the Karatal at the same place on all three sheets, which supports the reach but cannot be read as a coordinate. Basis: holder's georeference. Uncertainty: about 10 km.
Editorial treatment
Three accessions. Smirnov gave three field numbers (919, 921 and 922) on the same day and at the same place, and each is its own accession: Smirnov 919 (1928), Smirnov 921 (1928) and Smirnov 922 (1928).
Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's V. I. Smirnov, the label's В. И. Смирнов. No source read for these pages gives his full name, which is not linked.
Place. The province field takes Jetisu Region, in which the lower Karatal lies today; the label's Taldy-Kurgan uezd of Semirechye is a historical unit and is not entered.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives the habitat as тугайные поля (tugai fields); on the label поля is struck through and луга (meadows) written above it.
