Discussion
Why the area is mapped
- The Deccan Herald of 18 January 2010 reports a raid on a ganja farm at Kalakoppa near Shimoga in October 2009, and forest clearings planted with ganja in the Shikaripur, Sagar and Shimoga taluks.
- The Deccan Herald of 22 October 2017 reports cultivation in Kumsi village of Shivamogga taluk and in parts of the Sagar and Shikaripur taluks, with 505 plants seized in fifteen days.
- The Hemp Drugs Commission's Mysore witnesses describe wild hemp in the forests of the Shimoga and Kadur districts in the 1890s (1895 supplementary volume, p. 58) but no cultivation there.
Growing status
The status is Active: the reports read describe cultivation in the district in 2009 and 2017. The wild hemp of the 1890s is history, not cultivation, and sets no first grown year.
How the border is drawn
- The border is Shivamogga District in OpenStreetMap (administrative relation 2020649, named "Shimoga" there), simplified, about 8,500 km². It is a proxy: the reports name places in the Shivamogga, Sagar and Shikaripur taluks, three of the district's seven, and the 2017 report says the police were searching all seven.
- The area sits in the Western Ghats growing region, which is drawn on its documented tracts only.
- The map point (14.04, 75.22) is the centre of the border; the border is not drawn from it.
Sources
- Hemp Drugs Commission. Ricketts's memorandum (Vol. III, p. 135), McDonnell's (Vol. III, p. 147) and Ricketts's evidence in the 1895 supplementary volume (p. 58) were read on the page images.
- News. Both Deccan Herald articles were read in full. The 2010 article carries no byline. Its figures for 2009 (35 quintals seized, 18 cases) are what the article calls "last year".
- Not used. Later Prajavani reports of plants in an areca garden near Konandur (June 2024) and in Dindadahalli, Shikaripura taluk (October 2025), were seen only in search-result summaries, not read in full, and are not cited.
- The 2010 article says ganja had become "the main crop for farmers here"; this is the paper's own judgement, given without figures, and the article does not repeat it.
