Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant at Hsiang Shan in August 1932 and gives nothing more: no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from the garden's image as relayed by GBIF's image cache (2000 × 3000 pixels).
- Label (printed, completed by hand): 269 (above the label) / CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF PEKING / PLANTS OF CHINA / HOPEI PROVINCE / Name Cannabis sativa L / Locality Hsiang Shan. (faint) / Date Aug 15 -1932 / Remarks (blank) / H. Sheehan, collector / ident. (blank).
Georeferencing
The coordinate, 39.99, 116.18, is Wikidata's point for the Fragrant Hills park (香山, Q943688), 39.990997, 116.179692, rounded to two decimals; SRTM gives 316 m there. Wikidata's separate point for the hill (Q13386820) lies 700 m west at 562 m, and the label gives no altitude to choose between them; the park point at the foot of the hills is used. It stands for the place the label names, not for a collection site.
The label's Hopei Province is the province Peking belonged to in 1932. The Fragrant Hills are now in Haidian District, Beijing, and the province field takes Beijing.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The collector field takes the label's H. Sheehan. The Harvard botanist index has a Hubert J. Sheehan who collected in China, with no dates or institution; no source connects him to the Catholic University of Peking, so the name is not expanded or linked.
Source discrepancies
- None. The catalogue's locality and date match the label.
