Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The notes on the five sheets describe the plant: compact, about three feet tall, with very dark green leaves and, on one sheet, a strong smell of citronella. None says how it grew. Schultes's sheets of number 26507, a male plant Adjacent to plant of collections #26506, 26508, call it Much weaker than female plants in same field, which places 26508 in a field. Nothing in the catalogue says whether the field was sown with cannabis or the plants grew in it as weeds; number 26505, from the same week, was an escape, growing spontaneously in a formerly irrigated field (McPartland and Small 2020, supplementary file 1, p. 31). With no statement of cultivation or of its absence, the accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
The sheets have not been seen, and Harvard has published no image of them. The fields above are Harvard's transcriptions in its specimen index, read on 15 October 2026, for barcodes 00449803, 00429207, 00429208, 00429210 and 00429211. All five give the locality Near Kandahar, the date 1971-12-13 to 1971-12-20, the collector R. E. Schultes and the collector number 26508; the notes are in the table in the article. The transcriptions spell campact twice and have pf for of; they are quoted as Harvard gives them. Small and Cronquist cite a duplicate at the Ottawa herbarium (DAO). It is not in GBIF, and its label has not been read.
Georeferencing
The point 31.62, 65.72 is the city of Kandahar, OpenStreetMap node 97993575 (Wikidata Q45604 puts it at 31.62068, 65.71588). The catalogue's Near Kandahar names the city and no place near it. The city's area in Wikidata is about 800 km², a radius of about 16 km, and near allows the gathering to lie somewhat beyond it, so the uncertainty is put at about 20 km. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 20 km.
Editorial treatment
One accession covers the five sheets, which share the number, place and date. The title takes Schultes's number 26508. Harvard's index gives it as the collector number, and Small and Cronquist cite it as Schultes 26508. The collection date is stored to the month, December 1971, because the catalogue gives a range, 13–20 December, as it does for the other numbers of that week. The collector field takes R.E. Schultes, as on Schultes 26505 (1971). The province field takes Kandahar Province. The scientific name is Ernest Small's determination of 16 March 1976. Four sheets carry it; the fifth, 00449803, has no determiner in the index.
