Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant near Karakol in October 1877. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on whether the plant was grown or wild; Regel's protologue, as McPartland and Small translate it, adds that the plant is cultivated and grows quasi-spontaneously in Turkestan. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Identifier
No holder number is given. The designating paper cites the lectotype as (LE) with no number, and Tropicos holds it as specimen 101276000 (GBIF 3115519399), which is Tropicos's own record number. The catalogue number field is left empty.
Label reading
Read from the paper's photograph (Fig. 6a; the figure is 1512 × 1177 pixels, the left panel 718 × 1177).
- Printed label (lower right): A. REGEL. ITER TURKESTANICUM. 1877.; by hand 1/X after the year; Cannabis sativa L. / γ asperrima Rgl. / ad lac. Issyk-kul prope Karakol.
- Handwritten slip above it: Cannabis sativa L. and γ asperrima Rgl. are legible; its first and last lines are not read.
- The day and month, 1 October, agree with the date McPartland and Small give.
Georeferencing
The point 42.49, 78.40 is the town of Karakol, OpenStreetMap node 254467298 (42.4917, 78.3969), the point used for Gubanov s.n., Karakol (1956). The label places the gathering by the lake near Karakol and names no spot; the uncertainty allows for the town's mapped extent and for the label's prope (near). SRTM gives 1,759 m at the point; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km.
Editorial treatment
Title. The sheet carries no collector's number, so the title takes s.n. and the label's place, as on Regel s.n., Bortala (1878).
Date. The label writes 1/X with the printed year 1877 and does not say which calendar it follows; the Russian Empire then used the Julian calendar, in which 1 October 1877 is 13 October in the Gregorian. The field stores the date as the label and the designating paper give it.
Collector. The collector field takes Johann Albert von Regel (1845–1908), the A. Regel of the label; McPartland and Small identify him as Eduard Regel's son, a district physician at Kuldja. The determiner on the paper's citation, E. Regel, is Eduard August von Regel.
The second LE sheet. McPartland and Small list a second Albert Regel sheet at LE, from the hills above the Dschirgalan river, November 1877. It is not the lectotype and no image or record of it was found; it is not paged.
Source discrepancies
- Tropicos (GBIF 3115519399) gives the date of identification as 1 January 1877 and no collection date; the label and the paper give 1 October 1877.
- The paper's epitype paragraph for var. asperrima says the epitype is explicitly supporting the neotype; the type it supports is this lectotype.
