Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The article rests on the RSC listing for Nepali Highland, read live on 7 October 2026 and in four archived versions from May 2025 to June 2026; the Kwik Seeds listing, read live and in four archived versions; and four RSC blog posts (August 2024, September 2024, May 2025 and December 2025). Kwik Seeds is the shop RSC calls its other site (RSC, Hemp & Multipurpose). The listing dates the lot to the 2024 harvest and places it in "Nepal Himalaya". It names no village, district or farmer; the province comes from RSC's blog post of 3 December 2025. It establishes that RSC distributes seed of this population from that harvest. It does not establish where it was grown, who selected it or what its origin is. The post of December 2025 asserts a genomic and video basis for an origin in eastern Bengal and cites neither, so the article reports the assertion and attributes it. Georeferencing
Inferred. The listing gives no place and a latitude of about 28° N. Gandaki Province, named only in RSC's post of December 2025, is the one stated place. The coordinate is the midpoint of the province's extent along 28.00° N in its OpenStreetMap boundary (relation 10489605: 83.60° E to 84.80° E): 28.00, 84.20. It lies in Tanahun District by OpenStreetMap's reverse lookup. It is an inference from the listing's latitude and the post's province, not a collection site, and no district is entered. RSC's post of September 2024 instead names Makwanpur, in Bagmati Province near 27.4° N, as an example of where the type is used; the coordinate does not follow it, because the listing's own latitude is 28° N and the province is RSC's later and more specific statement. The two statements are reported, not reconciled. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
Editorial treatment
- Accession ID.
RSC-NPL-GAN-0120240002takesGANfrom Gandaki Province, asRSC-NPL-GAN-0120240001does, and is the next serial for that region and year. The year is the 2024 harvest. The month digits are01. - Name. The listing's title is Nepali Highland, on all four archived versions. The wiki's descriptive name adds "General Population 2024". The numbered listing Nepali Highland #2 is a separate accession.
- Collector.
Angus, following the other accessions RSC sourced itself. GRIN's donor notes for the numbered "Nepali Highland" lots say that the seeds were bought in a bazaar and that the donor had no information on their exact origin; those lots are discussed below and are not this accession's evidence. - Growth pattern and leaf shape. "Ultra-bushy" is entered as
Bushyand "narrow-leafleted" asNarrow. - Photoperiod.
Short-daybecause the listing and the post of September 2024 state that long days are the obstacle outdoors. It is not a convention here. - Height. Not entered: the listing gives none, and the only figures for the line are growers' reports that are not RSC's.
- Viability. "Showing over 80 per cent viability in tests" is entered as
Viable, as on the other RSC lots with a stated result. - Aroma and effects. Entered as the listing words them:
Mint, tobaccoandUplifting, energising, euphoric. - Conventions. Introgression
Minimalfollows the other RSC accessions; neither listing states it. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
Conservation priority
High. The type is described as a ganja landrace of one highland region whose origin RSC has itself revised, and the seed listings found are RSC's alone. RSC states no conservation priority, so the rating is the wiki's. The ratings follow the wiki's accession definitions: Critical rare, from a single farmer or micro-population; High limited population, few sources; Medium moderate population, multiple sources known; Low common, broadly available within its range. Source discrepancies
Reported as the sources give them; none is resolved here.
- Where it was collected. The listing: "Nepal Himalaya", "the exact same region of the ganja-producing highlands of Nepal" as the semidwarf landrace. The post of September 2024: in use in "subtropical mountain areas such as Makwanpur" and in the Terai. The post of December 2025: "collected in Gandaki Province". The December 2025 post also says that a lot points to an origin about 600 miles to the east.
- When it was collected. The listing: 2024 harvest. The post of August 2024: an accession of this type collected in Nepal "in 2022". The post of May 2025: the landrace "we collected in 2021, Nepali Highland". The three statements may describe different lots; the listing's is the only one that dates the seed on sale. The page follows the listing, and the earlier collection or collections are not accessioned here.
- What it is. RSC, September 2024: a Nepali domesticate used in the Terai and highlands and in Tripura. RSC, December 2025: "in fact a ganja landrace from eastern Bengal". The Kwik Seeds listing and the RSC listing agree that the line is a "tropical ganja landrace" that farmers cultivate "in regions such as the highlands of central Nepal, the Terai, and as far east as Tripura and Assam".
- Whether the 2024 seed is the same type. The listing of May 2025 said that RSC had not confirmed that the seeds were the same semidwarf landrace. The listing of November 2025 says they will produce the same type.
- Stature in growers' hands. RSC's text calls the line semidwarf and gives no height. In a THCFarmer discussion thread of 2026, growers of seed sold as Nepali Highland report plants of 42 inches at ten weeks in a 9-gallon bag, 6 feet 4 inches, and just under 8 feet; a grower says RSC told them to expect plants of about 6 feet. The reports are forum posts by pseudonymous growers who do not identify the lot, so they are not used on the article page.
- Kwik Seeds. Kwik Seeds says "Charas or ganja (bud)" as the purpose where RSC says "Ganja (sinsemilla or semi-sensi)", and from October 2025 "stealth-morphology semidwarf" where RSC says "semidwarf".
Archived versions
The Wayback Machine holds four versions of the RSC listing (20 May 2025, 13 November 2025, 9 February 2026 and 6 June 2026) and four of the Kwik Seeds listing (22 May 2025 to 14 April 2026). All were read.
- May 2025. "Newly collected" in the same region; a caution that RSC had not confirmed the seeds were the same landrace and "cannot yet guarantee" the type; "At least three recognizable types" of landrace grown in the area; five months from seed to harvest; a longer germination instruction.
- From 13 November 2025. The current text: "these seeds will produce the same ultra-bushy, narrow-leafleted, semidwarf type", the bamboo and selection passages, and six months from seed to harvest. The versions of 20 May and 13 November 2025 are cited in the article. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
Lineage
The listing's title is Nepali Highland on all four archived RSC versions (20 May 2025 to 6 June 2026) and all four Kwik Seeds versions, and each gives the 2024 harvest, so one lot has been on sale and the page is not split. The slug carries no numeric suffix, so no earlier listing stood at it in the archive's index; the archive holds nothing before May 2025. The listing was first photographed with the image that Nepali Highland #2 also carried until October 2025; the two listings are separate accessions, as RSC's numbering is a series of distinct accessions, but RSC's May and June 2025 texts on the two are nearly identical (they differ in the viability figure and the germination instruction), and the listings do not say how the lots differ. Gorkha Nepali (RSC-NPL-GAN-0120240001) is a multipurpose line from Barpak that RSC sourced in the same province in winter 2024; the two listings describe different types. A "Nepali Highland #3" was offered as a freebie in December 2025 and April 2026 and has no listing, so it is not documented here. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
USDA genebank accessions
The USDA holds four lots named Nepali Highland #1 to #4 (G 34115 to G 34118, received 3 August 2026) and one named Nepali Mountain Ganja (G 34119) from the same donation. They are not listed on this page. The donor's narrative on G 34115 to G 34118 reads that the seeds were "purchased in Manakamana Bazaar, Nepal from women selling the seeds", that the numbers "denote distinct batches, ie from different sellers", that he "didn't get information as to the exact origin of the seeds / batches", and that all appear to be "the same landrace type as 'Pokhara'". That describes bought seed of unknown origin, where the RSC listing describes seed RSC collected. The entries match this listing by name only, and the lot rule does not accept a name. G 34115 to G 34118 are GRIN-only entries until the donor says which lot, if any, RSC's listings sold. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
Photographs
The infobox image is the listing's only photograph, uploaded under fair use at reduced resolution. The listing gives no caption. It replaced, between 20 May and 13 November 2025, a photograph that both this listing and the one for Nepali Highland #2 showed in May and June 2025; that earlier file is no longer on either and is not used. The black bars at the sides are part of the file RSC serves. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
