Discussion
Identifier
The accession identifier is RSC-AFG-NAN-0120190001-R1: the identifier of the collection, RSC-AFG-NAN-0120190001, with the reproduction suffix -R1.
Sourcing
The RSC listing for Tora Bora as it stood on 27 October 2026 and its 16 versions in the Wayback Machine from November 2020 to April 2026 that sell the open-pollinated stock; the Kwik Seeds listing as it stood on 26 October 2026; and the GRIN-Global entry for G 33767.
Evidentiary scope
The sources establish that the seed on sale since November 2020 comes from open-pollinating a large population grown from the collection, and the donor's note of 2023 calls it an ex situ maintenance grow. They do not say where or by whom it was grown, or how many generations separate it from the collected seed.
Typing
- Accession type: Reproduction, autochtonous
No: the listing calls the seed the product of open-pollinating a population from the original accession. - Classification: Landrace, the class of the collection it was grown from.
- Sourcing type and collector are left empty: the sources do not say how many generations have been grown, and the collection's collector is not entered either.
- No coordinates. The sources do not say where the reproduction was grown. The collection's place is on RSC-AFG-NAN-0120190001, so the line appears on the map once.
Photographs
The infobox image and the gallery image are from the RSC listing, uploaded under fair use at reduced resolution. The listing has shown four near-identical photographs of plants beside a measuring pole since September 2024, with the statement "The more recent photos are of plants from this accession at 40° N in mid July"; the infobox caption follows those words. They show plants grown outside Afghanistan, so they are on this page and not on the collection's. The person holding the pole is not identified; one of the four, whose copy on the listing masks the face, is not used.
USDA genebank accession
The U.S. National Plant Germplasm System holds Tora Bora seed as G 33767 (GRIN-Global entry), received on 22 August 2023 in a donation of one packet from Angus. The infobox lists it as the same lot as this accession:
- the donor's note describes "Seeds from an ex-situ maintenance grow of an accession from the Af-Pak border region around the Tora Bora caves";
- the listing sold the open-pollinated stock from November 2020, before the donation, and RSC lists no other Tora Bora line.
The entry gives the origin as Pakistan; the country is discussed on Talk:RSC-AFG-NAN-0120190001. A curator's note from the unit's 2024 field trial in New York says that plants were likely susceptible to powdery mildew; the article does not report it.
