Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label records a spontaneous herb 3 m. tall growing in waste area. at Roxbury. The plant grew outside cultivation, and the accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label. The label does not say whether the plant descended from a crop or from discarded seed. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from the Missouri Botanical Garden's image of the sheet as GBIF publishes it (480 × 640 pixels; the image is licensed CC BY-NC-SA 3.0, so it is not reproduced here).
- Stamp MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN HERBARIUM / № 2605928, above a barcode too small to read at this size.
- Typed label a printed heading of which only …NTS OF CULTIVATION is legible / No. S.N. / Cannabis sativa L. / ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS: spontaneous herb 3 m. tall growing in waste area. / Coll. Timothy Plowman / Date: 1 Oct 1973.
The Smithsonian sheet (US 2852239, barcode 00976041) has not been imaged. Its catalogue gives Roxbury, Massachusetts, 1 October 1973, the collector as Timothy C. Plowman and the number as s.n..
Georeferencing
The point 42.33, −71.09 is the middle of the Roxbury neighbourhood of Boston, OpenStreetMap relation 4033679 (Wikidata Q20138 puts it at 42.325, −71.0953). The label names the neighbourhood and no spot within it. The neighbourhood's outline in OpenStreetMap spans about 5.5 km north to south and 3.4 km east to west. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 4 km.
Editorial treatment
One accession covers the Missouri and Smithsonian sheets, which share the place, the date and the s.n.. Missouri's sheet is the primary one because its label has been read. The title follows the form for a sheet with no collector number, and adds Missouri's accession number because Plowman made a second Roxbury gathering two days later, on 3 October 1973, whose sheet is at Harvard (Plowman s.n., Roxbury (1973), ECON 00946341). That sheet's label wording differs: it is described as an Escaped weed, growing at edge of cultivated ground. The two are kept as separate gatherings because their dates and their descriptions of the plant differ.
The collector field takes T.C. Plowman, the form the wiki's other Plowman accessions use; the label signs Timothy Plowman. The province field takes Massachusetts. No county is entered: neither catalogue gives one.
