Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant in the Karabakh autonomous region in September 1934. It gives no place within the region, no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3679 × 5275 pixels).
- Printed form. Expeditio complexa Karabaghensis Institutionis Botanici Univ. Mosquensis / V. A. et I. P. Petrov, Plantae Karabaghenses. / Regio autonoma Karabagh. / ……… m. supra niv. maris. (blank) / Legnt.: V. A. et I. P. Petrov. / Det.: (blank) / 74 printed at the lower right.
- By hand. Cannabis sativa L. (pencil) / 5.IX and the year's last figure 4 after the printed 193.
- The stamped number 7521 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label names only the Regio autonoma Karabagh, the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast of 1923 to 1991, a historical unit that covered 4,161 km² at its formation. OpenStreetMap has no boundary for it, and the present-day districts that cover its ground (Khankendi, Khojaly, Shusha, Khojavend and others) do not follow its outline, so no middle can be taken for it. No province is entered for the same reason. The herbarium's database publishes the point 39.74257, 46.755495 for this sheet, 2.3 km from the town of Shusha, with the remark that no label data supports it and no uncertainty; the label names no town, so the point is not used.
Editorial treatment
Collectors. The printed label names both V. A. and I. P. Petrov as collectors, and the collector field carries both; the catalogue names V. A. Petrov alone for this sheet and both for the 1936 sheet. No source read gives either's full name.
Place. The label's Regio autonoma Karabagh is the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, which the locality field names; the country field takes Azerbaijan, in which the oblast lay.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue names V. A. Petrov as the only collector; the printed label names V. A. and I. P. Petrov.
- The catalogue's point near Shusha is set out under Georeferencing.
