Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant in stony stream beds in a Mongolian range in July 1924. It gives no use, no note on cultivation and no legible place. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3662 × 5254 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.

  • Printed label. N. Pawlow / Plantae Mongoliae Expeditio P Kozlowii / leg. et det. N.V. Pawlow. A stamp Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis lies over it; a second printed label shows through the paper beneath and cannot be read.
  • Pencil. Cannabis sativa L. / Св. каменистые места в руслах руч- / ев на горах [mountains] в дол. р. [river] / 9-VII-24 г. N618.
  • Readings that differ. The first word was read Св. twice (Сз. allowed once); the catalogue has СЗ.. The mountains were read Цзаха (with the catalogue) and Узаха; a third look did not decide between them. The river's name runs off the label's edge and was read Сучж… and Сучон…; the catalogue has Сучж..
  • A pencilled 197? at the lower right (last digit 2 or 3) is a later note and is not used.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The mountains (Цзаха or Узаха) and the river (Сучж…) were searched in Nominatim under the spellings Цзаха, Заха, Зах уул, Сужигт, Сүжигт, Суцзукте and Sudzhigt, without result, and the readings of both names are uncertain. No province is stated, and none is entered.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The collector field keeps the printed form N. V. Pawlow. The expedition is that of Pyotr Kozlov, whose last expedition worked in northern Mongolia from 1923 to 1926; the label names Kozlov and the year 1924 and no more, and the page does not place the gathering on the expedition's route.

Taxon. The infobox takes Pawlow's own determination, Cannabis sativa L.; the later sheets of this series in the same herbarium are determined Cannabis ruderalis.

Source discrepancies

  • The herbarium's database publishes the point 47.778743, 103.962706 for this sheet, in Dashinchilen sum of Bulgan Province. It states no basis or uncertainty, and the label names no place that could be checked against it, so it is not used. Six of the twelve points the same database gives for this herbarium's other Mongolian cannabis sheets fall away from their labels' places.
