Page scope
North-eastern Afghanistan is a Growing Region: a named cultivation region above Growing Areas. It covers the part of the surveys' North-eastern region (Badakhshan, Takhar and Kunduz) that lies outside the Hindu Kush growing region: Kunduz, northern Takhar and the districts of Badakhshan north of the Kokcha and the Panj. It has no growing area yet.

Discussion

Why the region is on the map

  • The cannabis surveys of the Afghan Ministry of Counter Narcotics and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (2009 to 2012) report cultivation by province and gather the provinces into six regions: Central, Eastern, North-eastern, Northern, Southern and Western (2010 survey, Table 1, p. 13; the same grouping in 2011, Table 1, p. 13).
  • Cannabis was found in Badakhshan and Takhar in every year from 2009 to 2012 and in Kunduz from 2010 to 2012 (2012 survey, Table 1, p. 12).

Growing status

The status is Active: the surveys found cannabis grown in the region's provinces from 2009 to 2011. No source read says that growing in the region has ended.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy drawn on administrative units: the three provinces (OpenStreetMap province relations, fetched 19 October 2026).
  • Badakhshan's Wakhan (west of the Baroghil Pass), Ishkashim, Zebak, Kuran wa Munjan, Yamgan, Jurm, Wurduj, Baharak, Tagab and Tishkan districts and Takhar's Warsaj and Farkhar lie in the Hindu Kush and belong to that growing region. The Pamir end of the Wakhan, east of the Baroghil Pass, stays with this region as a separate piece.
  • The region takes in the existing border of each of its growing areas where that border and the province line differ by a few square kilometres.
  • The union is about 40,100 km², the figure in the infobox.
  • The grouping of provinces is the surveys' own, used for their regional figures; it is not a physical region, and the article says whose grouping it is.
  • The border is not drawn from accession or news points.

Accessions inside the border

  • No accession is filed under the region. Two herbarium sheets lie inside the border, Hedge W 9486 (1969) (between Yawarzan and Qeshm, at a field's edge) and Podlech 12748 (1965) (west of Keshem); neither label says the plant was cultivated.
  • The eradication report of 5 October 2026 from Badakhshan covers the whole province, part of which lies in the Hindu Kush growing region. It is not filed under either region.
