Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 31816 (Inventory No. 28 (1912), pp. 47, 51) and the entry for PI 31816 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the collector, his number, the date, the village and oasis, a local name and the crop's uses. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

The identifier NPG-CHN-XIN-1219100001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 31816.

  • NPG stands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.
  • CHN is the ISO code for China.
  • XIN stands for Xinjiang.
  • Month 12: December, the month the seed was gathered.
  • Year 1910 is the year the seed was gathered.
  • 0001 is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.

Classification

Meyer's note names a local variety of the oasis and how its seed, fibre and tops were used, so the accession is classified Landrace.

Collectors and donors

The inventory gives the seed as Meyer's number 1511a with his note, and GRIN-Global lists him as collector, so he is given as collector.

Name

The note gives the name as Kandivi; GRIN-Global has the same. It is entered as the local name.

Location and georeferencing

The inventory names the oasis of Sandju, today's Sanju, and the village Khanaka within it, and nothing finer. The point 37.18, 78.46 is the point OpenStreetMap gives for the town of Sanju, Pishan County (node 8867383163), a locality georeference for the place the source names, not a collection point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km, taking in the oasis; Khanaka itself has not been matched to a place on today's map.

Dates

The collection date, 4 December 1910, is the date of Meyer's number as both sources give it. The department received the consignment on 11 September 1911, the lot's received date.

Wording

Meyer's note ends with a line on the people who smoked hashish, in the moral language of 1910. The article gives what the note says about the crop and its uses and leaves that line to the source.
