Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 18451 (Inventory No. 12 (1907), pp. 84, 86) and the entry for PI 18451 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the collector's number and the city, and nothing more. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

The identifier NPG-CHN-SHG-0019060001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 18451.

  • NPG stands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.
  • CHN is the ISO code for China.
  • SHG stands for Shanghai.
  • Month 00: the date the seed was gathered is not known.
  • Year 1906 is the year the department received the lot.
  • 0001 is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.

Classification

The entry names the city and nothing about the crop or where it was grown, so the accession is classified Unknown.

Collectors and donors

The seed carries Meyer's own number in a consignment the inventory says came through him, and GRIN-Global lists him as collector, so he is given as collector. GRIN-Global gives the number as 2247a. The printed entry has 247a, which fits the run of his numbers 216a to 254a in the same consignment, and the page follows the print.

Location and georeferencing

The inventory names Shanghai and nothing finer. The point 31.23, 121.47 is the point OpenStreetMap gives for the city of Shanghai (node 778910398), a locality georeference for the place the source names, not a collection point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km, the radius of the city's built-up core; the city of the time was smaller.

Dates

The date the seed was gathered is not known, so the collection date is empty. Both sources give 28 April 1906 as the date of receipt, the lot's received date. The identifier therefore carries month 00 and the year of receipt.
