Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 34291 (Inventory No. 32 (1914), p. 31) and the entry for PI 34291 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the donor and his note on the kinds of hemp grown around the city. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

The identifier NPG-CHN-HUB-0019120001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 34291.

  • NPG stands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.
  • CHN is the ISO code for China.
  • HUB stands for Hubei.
  • Month 00: the date the seed was gathered is not known.
  • Year 1912 is the year the department received the lot.
  • 0001 is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.

Classification

Greene's note describes the ta ma hemps grown in the neighbourhood of the city he wrote from and places this seed among them, so the accession is classified Landrace.

Collectors and donors

GRIN-Global lists R. S. Greene, of the United States consulate at Hankow, as its source; the printed inventory says he presented the seed. Neither source says he gathered it, so the infobox gives no collector.

Name

The printed note gives the name as ta ma; GRIN-Global has Tu ma. The page follows the print.

Location and georeferencing

The inventory names Hankow, today part of Wuhan, and nothing finer. The point 30.60, 114.27 is the point OpenStreetMap gives for Jianghan District, at the heart of old Hankou (relation 3077256), a locality georeference for the place the source names, not a collection point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 6 km, the old city's extent plus 1 km for the two-decimal form.

Dates

The date the seed was gathered is not known, so the collection date is empty. Both sources give 21 August 1912 as the date of receipt, the lot's received date. The identifier therefore carries month 00 and the year of receipt.
