Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 77398 (Inventory No. 96 (1930), p. 9) and the entry for PI 77398 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the donor, the channel, the date and the place the variety was grown. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.
Identifier
The identifier NPG-CHL-UNK-0019280002 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 77398.
NPGstands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.CHLis the ISO code for Chile.UNK: no province is recorded.- Month
00: the date the seed was gathered is not known. - Year 1928 is the year the department received the lot.
0002is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.
Classification
The inventory describes the seed as a variety grown at Lanco, which places it in a crop at the named place. Nothing in either source suggests a bred or introduced variety, so the accession is classified Landrace.
Collectors and donors
GRIN-Global lists Dewey, L.H. and Momberg, J.A. in its collector field. The printed inventory says the seeds were presented by Momberg through Dewey and does not say either gathered them, so the infobox gives no collector.
Location and georeferencing
The coordinate is Lanco, at the point OpenStreetMap gives for the commune (relation 1771698), -39.45, -72.78, which falls in the town. OpenStreetMap's other Lanco, a hamlet near Illapel in Coquimbo Region, does not fit: GRIN-Global places the lot in the southern region that then held Valdivia, and the lot came with one from Valdivia. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km, the town's extent plus 1 km for the two-decimal form. No province is entered: GRIN-Global gives Los Lagos, the region Lanco belonged to until 2007, and Lanco is now in Los Ríos Region.
Dates
The date the seed was gathered is not known, so the collection date is empty. Both sources give 20 September 1928 as the date of receipt, the lot's received date. The identifier therefore carries month 00 and the year of receipt, and the province segment UNK.
