Page scope
Messenia treats the regional unit of Messenia, in the south-west Peloponnese, as a cannabis growing area: the plantations police have found there and the seed lines traced to the Kalamata region. Messenia as an administrative unit, the city of Kalamata and the Taygetos range are separate subjects; a page on the administrative unit would take the title Messenia (regional unit).

Discussion
Why Messenia is a growing area
- Tharros (28 December 2019) reports that the Kalamata drug squad uprooted and seized 2,515 plants in Messenia in 2019, the largest and most of the plantations on Taygetos; that in the two previous years most had been found in Triphylia; and that more than 10,500 plants were seized over the three years. The report names no village.
- Gkotsinas (2020, p. 373) names the farmers of Messenia, with those of Arcadia and Argolida, as the growers the 1920 law's provision favoured. No other historical source places hashish growing in Messenia.
- Two seed lines trace to the Kalamata region: The Real Seed Company's Kalamata Red (sourced from Delicorganic in 2004, a seller's account) and a line sold by Hippie Cannabis Genetics. The sellers' statements are attributed and are not evidence of the area by themselves.
Growing status
- The status is Active: the 2019 report describes cannabis grown in Messenia in 2017–2019. The Real Seed Company's statement that growing ceased in one unnamed village under enforcement pressure concerns that village only.
Extent and border
- The map border is approximate. It is the regional unit of Messenia as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 959149, fetched 19 October 2026), about 7,163 km²; the infobox area is rounded from it. Kalamata, Kyparissia and Pylos lie inside; Sparta and Megalopoli lie outside. The coordinates of the two seed lots of the Kalamata region fall inside.
- Taygetos is shared between Messenia and Laconia. The 2019 report, from the Kalamata police, counts plants seized in Messenia; plantations on the Laconian side would lie outside the border.
- The point in the infobox is near the centre of the border, not a field.
Sources
- Tharros (2019). Read in Greek; the English title is a translation.
- Gkotsinas (2020). Page numbers are the printed ones.
- The Real Seed Company, Kalamata Red. A seller's listing, attributed in the article.
Other reports
- Stefanis, Ballas and Madianou (1975, p. 319) name Kalamata only as a port city with a relatively high share of hashish users in the police archives of 1958–1973. That concerns use, not growing, and is not used.
- Undated press reports of plantations in Messenia (of 231 plants, 102 plants and a find from a police helicopter) are not used until their dates are confirmed.
- The Hippie Cannabis Genetics listing is not quoted.
