Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label gives the habitat as edge of cornfield in sand along river bank, at Tsing Cheung Village, Annam, on 28 January 1932, and the name Foh Ma. The plant grew at the edge of a field, not in the crop. The label reports, as hearsay, The oil expressed from the seeds is said to be used locally as an illuminant. (the seed oil was burned for light there). Its statement about Foh Ma Yan in Chinese medicine concerns China, not the place of collection. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because the label does not say whether this plant was cultivated.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted and the province field is empty. Tsing Cheung is a Cantonese romanisation of a Vietnamese place name, and it has not been identified. McClure's other Annam labels of 27 to 29 January 1932 include Yeung She near Thanh Hoa, which places the party in the north of Annam that week. Thanh Chương in Nghệ An is one possible reading of the name, but no source connects the two.

Editorial treatment

Country. The garden's catalogue codes the sheet China. The label is printed Flora of Indo-China, names the province Annam, and its distribution label strikes Kwangtung for Indochina; the Sun Yat-sen duplicate is filed under Vietnam. The page is filed under Vietnam.

Collector. The collector field takes the label's F. A. McClure. The Harvard botanist index gives him as Floyd Alonzo McClure (1897–1970), and the prose links that form.

Name. The local name field holds the label's Foh Ma, a Cantonese romanisation recorded by McClure's party; the label does not say who used the name at Tsing Cheung.

Catalogue number. The infobox stores the catalogue's 1414429; the barcode on the sheet reads 01414429.

Source discrepancies

  • The garden's catalogue codes the country China (CN); the label reads Flora of Indo-China and Annam, and the Sun Yat-sen duplicate is coded Vietnam.
  • The catalogue's determination is Cannabis sativa subsp. sativa; the slip on the sheet adds var. sativa.
