Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant at Kinshu, Manchuria, in 1941. It gives no habitat, use or note on cultivation, and the place is one of two towns. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from Meise's original image (5755 × 8025 pixels).
- Label (printed, typed entries): Makino Herbarium 120412 / From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino (1862—1957), one of the pioneer botanists of Japan. / Cannabis sativa L. / Kinshu, MANCHURIA / Date: 1941 / Coll.: Tomitarô MAKINO Det.: K. Hiyama (1960).
The label was printed after Makino's death in 1957 and copies the data of the original record.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted. Kinshu is the Japanese reading of both 金州 (Jinzhou District, Dalian; Wikidata Q1362024) and 錦州 (Jinzhou City; Wikidata Q28996, formerly Chinchow), 230 km apart, and nothing on the sheet decides between them. Both are in Liaoning, which the province field takes.
Editorial treatment
Title. The label carries no collector's number, so the title takes the s.n. form with the place in its present-day form, Jinzhou, which fits either reading of Kinshu.
Collector. The label prints Coll.: Tomitarô Makino; the collector field and the prose give the name in modified Hepburn, Tomitarō Makino, and the prose links it. Makino was 79 in 1941, the Harvard botanist index records no collecting by him in Manchuria, and no source read places him there; the sheet may have come into his herbarium from another collector. The page reports the label and claims nothing more.
Determiner. K. Hiyama is probably Kozo Hiyama (born 1905) in the Harvard botanist index; the field keeps the label's form.
Source discrepancies
- None. The catalogue's place and year match the label; its number S.N. means the sheet has none.
