Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant at Ōizumi in July or August 1942 and names Makino as the collector. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (1092 × 1920 pixels).
- Header (printed and stamped). RIJKSHERBARIUM, LEIDEN / (Herb. Lugd. Bat.) / GESUBLIMATISEERD (treated with sublimate) / № 530337.
- Label (printed, typed entries). 120394 / Makino Herbarium / From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino / (1862—1957), one of the pioneer botanists of Japan. / Cannabis sativa L. / Oiuzmi, Nerima-ku, Tokyo Pref. / Date: July-Aug., 1942 / Coll.: Tomitaro MAKINO Det.:K.Hiyama(1960).
- The sheet carries the barcodes L.1592649 and, from an earlier numbering, L 0815791; the stamped number 100640 is a registration number of the herbarium.
Georeferencing
The point 35.76, 139.59 is the middle of the six present-day areas of Nerima named Ōizumi in OpenStreetMap (Ōizumi-machi, Higashi-Ōizumi, Nishi-Ōizumi, Minami-Ōizumi, Ōizumi-gakuen-chō and Nishi-Ōizumi-machi; relations 18575463, 18573669, 18573559, 18570015, 18575473 and 18573560), checked to fall inside them. Together they cover 11.3 km²; Nishi-Ōizumi-machi is a scrap of about 2,000 m². It is an area point for Ōizumi, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
Editorial treatment
Title. The label's 120394 is a number of the Makino Herbarium, not a collector's number, so the title takes the s.n. form; the place is Ōizumi in modified Hepburn, for the label's Oiuzmi.
Collector. The label prints Coll.: Tomitaro MAKINO; the collector field takes the name as the wiki spells it, Tomitarō Makino, and the prose links his biography.
Determiner. K. Hiyama is probably Kozo Hiyama (born 1905), the only K. Hiyama in the Harvard index of botanists; the field keeps the label's form.
Date. The label gives two months, so the date field takes the year alone.
Place. The province and municipality fields take Tokyo and Nerima ward; the locality field gives Ōizumi.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue dates the sheet to July 1942; the label reads July-Aug., 1942. The page follows the label.
- The catalogue gives the collector's number as Makino, T 120394; on the label 120394 is the Makino Herbarium's number.
