Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label records hemp on the cultivated land of the Tong-tchouan plain at 2,500 m, in August, as cultivé et subspontanée: grown as a crop and also coming up of itself near cultivation. It does not say which of the two this plant was, name a variety or a use, or give a year. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high), in two independent readings.

  • Printed. HERBARIUM OF MONSEIGNEUR LÉVEILLÉ; stamp SUBLIMISÉ. The sheet carries the printed slip Herbarium of Monseigneur Léveillé and the stamp Sublimisé, which records that it was treated with corrosive sublimate (mercuric chloride) against insects.
  • Handwritten. Août. Chanvre cultivé et subspontanée, terres cultivées de la plaine à Tong-tchouan altit. 2500 m. / E.E. Maire.
  • Altitude. Both readings give 2500; one notes that the second figure might be a 9 (2900). The page takes 2,500 m.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Tong-tchouan is Dongchuan. The old prefecture of Dongchuan had its seat at today's Huize (Wikidata Q764900; SRTM 2,130 m at its point), and the modern Dongchuan District of Kunming (Q1241329) lies at 1,245 m at its point. Neither matches the label's 2,500 m, and the label names a plain, not a town. The province field takes Yunnan.

Editorial treatment

Date. The label gives the month, August, and no year, so no date is stored and the title takes (s.d.). Maire headed the Tong-tchouan district until 1890 and died at Dongchuan in 1932 (French Wikipedia; Harvard botanist index), so his years there do not narrow the date.

Title. The sheet has no number, so the title takes s.n. and the present-day name of the place, Dongchuan.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's E. E. Maire: Édouard-Ernest Maire (1848–1932), of the Missions Étrangères de Paris, pro-vicar of Yunnan. The prose links that form.

Source discrepancies

  • Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the label.
