Discussion

Why Mae Rim is a growing area

  • Matichon (2018) reports every Hmong household of Ban Mae Sa Noi planting hemp for the funeral garment; Thai PBS (2023) reports the Daomong enterprise growing more than 3 rai there; Thai PBS (2019) reports a hemp-goods group at Ban Mae Sa Mai.
  • Three herbarium sheets show cannabis cultivated in the Mae Sa watershed: Boulanger 1262 and 1520 (1977, Meise sheet images read) and Nanakorn 7031 (1996, Forest Herbarium sheet image read).
  • The status is Active: the press reports of 2018, 2019 and 2023 record growing since 2000.

Extent and border

  • The map border is the whole of Mae Rim District (OpenStreetMap), about 450 km². The sources name villages in the Mae Sa valley and Pong Yaeng subdistrict; none draws a boundary.
  • Doi Suthep–Pui National Park reaches into the district over the Mae Sa valley. To keep the two growing areas apart, the district is kept whole here and the park's Mae Rim part belongs to this area, not to Doi Suthep–Pui. Ban Mae Sa Mai and the three sheets lie inside the border.

Where the sources disagree

  • The same village head appears at Ban Mae Sa Noi in Matichon (2018) and at Ban Mae Sa Mai in Thai PBS (2019). The page gives each report's village.

Not used

  • A 2021 report that Hmong in Mae Rim sold hemp cloth to a Chiang Mai brand is used only for the sale; it does not say where the plants were grown.
