Evidentiary scope

The form places the plant in Lieux incultes, uncultivated places, at Laochünshan in August 1935. It gives no use. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557954, 1,001 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field form (printed INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA, typed, faint): Field No. L. 4945 / Date 5/8/1935 / Locality Laochünshan, Lushih-hsien, Honan / Altitude 6[·]0m. (the middle digit under a blot) / Habitat Lieux in cultes (as typed) / Flower verdâtres / Collector K.M.Liou.
  • Herbarium label (HERBARIUM ACADEMIÆ NATIONALIS PEKINENSIS / FLORA CHINENSIS, typed): Cannabis sativa L. / Honan: Lushih-hsien, Laochünshan Aug. 5, 1935 / Leg. K.M.Liou (4945). Det. T.P.Wang; a round blue stamp, 卡.
  • HONAN province stamp; Hg Cl2; round stamp of the herbarium of the Institute of Botany, National Academy of Peiping; stamped number 421621.

The two readings agree. One read the middle digit of the altitude as 6, 8 or 0 and the other as 8 or 0; one read the habitat as Lieux in cultos.

  • Yangling sheet (WUK0001291), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (WUK0001291, 990 × 1,440 pixels). Typed form (INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA): Field No. L. 4945 / Date 5/8/1935 / Locality Laochünshan, Lushih-hsien, Honan / Altitude 660m. / Habitat Lieux in cultes (as typed) / Flower verdâtres / Collector K.M.Liou. Label of the Herbarium Academiae Nationalis Pekinensis: Cannabis sativa L. / Honan: Lushih-hsien, Laochünshan / Aug. 5,1935 / Leg. K.M.Liou (4945) Det. T.P.Wang. A red tag with the collector's name and the number; round stamp of the herbarium of the Institute of Botany, National Academy of Peiping. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree, both reading the altitude as 660 m.

Georeferencing

No point is given. Laochünshan is read as Laojun Shan (老君山) and Lushih-hsien as Lushi County (盧氏縣). The Laojun Shan of today (Wikidata Q17003951; summit 2,217 m, OpenStreetMap node 6757700795) lies in Luanchuan County, which Chinese Wikipedia says was formed in 1947 from parts of Song and Lushi counties, so in 1935 it lay in Lushi, as the label says. But the label's altitude, 660 m (blotted on the Beijing form, clear on the Yangling one), falls well below that mountain: SRTM gives about 1,006 m at the middle of its scenic area (OpenStreetMap way 1335058118) and 876 m at the visitor centre at its foot, while the Lushi county town stands at 560 m. The label's place cannot be tied to that mountain, and the Lushi County of 1935, which took in what is now Luanchuan, was larger than the county of today, so neither county gives a point that holds. The province field takes Henan.

Editorial treatment

Classification. Feral follows from the form's Lieux incultes, uncultivated places, with no word of a crop.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's K. M. Liou. The Harvard botanist index lists a K. M. Liou with sheets at Nanjing and Beijing, with no full name or dates. The number carries the L. that T. N. Liou's forms use (Liou 1923 (1930), Liou 3403 (1931)), but the form names K. M. Liou, and no source ties the two. The name is not linked.

Elevation. The middle digit of the altitude is blotted on the Beijing form; the Yangling form reads 660 m in both readings, and 660 m is stored.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Yangling sheets share the number, the place, the habitat and the date. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • The altitude's middle digit is blotted on the Beijing form; the Yangling form reads 660 m.
  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0001291 also as record be20f392); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.

Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 22:19, 13 October 2026 (+07)
