Evidentiary scope

The label gives the place, the date and the collector. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00578079, 995 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field form (printed INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA): Field No. 20810 and Date SEP 6 1946 (purple stamps) / Locality 昆明太華寺北溝 (by hand) / Collector Tchen-Ngo Liou and 劉慎諤 (stamps).
  • Slip (lined): the date stamp SEP 6 194·, its last digit inked as the 6 of SEP 6 is on the form.
  • Determination slip. Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit 吳征鎰, III, 1955.
  • YUNNAN province stamp; stamped number 421642.

The readings agree on the number, the place and the form's date. One read the slip's stamp as 1940, uncertain, and did not read the Chinese collector stamp or the determiner's signature with confidence.

Georeferencing

太華寺 is Taihua Si, a Buddhist temple in the Western Hills of Kunming (Wikidata Q135207563), and 北溝 is the gully north of it, which no map names. The point 24.96, 102.63 is the temple, OpenStreetMap way 1093577839; SRTM gives 2,215 m there, and the label gives no altitude. The point stands for the temple and the gully beside it, not the spot where the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.

Editorial treatment

Date. The form's stamp reads SEP 6 1946. The slip carries the same stamp, its last digit inked as the 6 of SEP 6 is; 6 September 1946 is stored.

Collector. The collector field takes T. N. Liou, the label form of his name, as on Liou 9208 (1936); the stamps give Tchen-Ngo Liou and 劉慎諤. He is Liou Tchen-ngo (刘慎谔, 1897 or 1898 to 1975): the Harvard botanist index gives T. N. Liou as the label form of Liou, Tchen-ngo, with the dates 1898–1975; Wikidata and Chinese Wikipedia give 26 August 1897. The prose links Liou Tchen-ngo. Chinese Wikipedia records that the National Academy of Peiping moved to Kunming in 1941.

Determination. The 1955 slip is signed 吳征鎰 in characters, and the identified-by field takes the name as written.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
