Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label records Cannabis at the Falls of Niagara in September 1858. It gives no habitat, so it does not say whether the plant was cultivated, escaped or growing wild, and it records no use or name. The accession is classified Other. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. The sheet's other material may be Thomson's, from the Himalaya, which limits what any one stem can be taken to show.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00248603, 2854 × 4096 pixels).

  • Label, foot: 84. Lawson's Canadian Plants. / Cannabis sativa, L. / Falls of Niagara, / Sept. 1858.
  • Printed slip, right centre: Herb. Ind. Or. Hook. fil. & Thomson. / Cannabis sativa var. indica / Hab. Himal. Bor. Occ. / Regio temp. / Alt. 1–7000 ped. / Coll. T.T.
  • Embossed stamp, top left: Royal Botanic Garden (partly legible).

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. The label names the falls without a bank or a point. The country and province follow the series title, Canadian Plants, and the Canadian Museum of Nature's catalogue, which places its sheet of the gathering in Ontario. The museum's own coordinate is a secondary georeference and is not used.

Editorial treatment

The title takes Lawson's series number, 84, as the collector number; the Canadian Museum of Nature's sheet carries the same number under Lawson's name. The collector field takes G. Lawson.

The Thomson slip is reported, not made an accession. It names a region and an altitude band, not a gathering. A second accession would also need a title that the slip cannot supply, because Edinburgh's Thomson s.n. (by 1878) carries the same slip.

Source discrepancies

  • Collector and country. Edinburgh's catalogue and GBIF: collector Thomas Thomson, country India, with Lawson's number and date. The label gives Lawson's series, the Falls of Niagara and September 1858, and the Canadian Museum of Nature catalogues its sheet of the gathering under Lawson, in Ontario. The infobox follows the label.
  • Date. Canadian Museum of Nature: 1858, with 1858-09 as written. Label: Sept. 1858.
